Saxophone basics

What is a saxophone?

The saxophone is a versatile and expressive wind instrument, which makes it very popular with beginners and professionals alike. Most saxophones are shiny gold and are usually made of brass. However, contrary to what the metallic body suggests, saxophones belong to the family of woodwind instruments . This is due to the leaf , which is originally composition of wood. Even though newer reeds are made of plastic, tradition continues to refer to them as woodwind instruments.

Similarities of the saxophone family

Although there are different saxophones, the conical design is identical on almost all instruments. Tapered means that the pipe widens towards the end. You should also know that saxophones are transposing musical instruments . This means that the sounding pitch does not correspond to the notated one or that the player himself has to transpose the notes into the corresponding key . For example, the notation of the saxophone part differs from the accompanying instruments. The pitch range of the different saxophone models always appears to be the same in the notes, from b to f sharp . Due to the different tunings, the soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones sound in very different registers.

What requirements should I have to play the saxophone?

In addition to quality, beginners should value ease of use . Due to its comparatively small size, the alto saxophone is ideal for getting started in the saxophone world and with the right exercises, even beginners can achieve their first successes relatively quickly. Here too, due to the relatively high weight and a certain width of the sound tube, you should be of appropriate height and have sufficient lung volume . As a reference, the textbooks recommend an age of 10 years, but as soon as you are physically able to hold a saxophone, nothing stands in the way of learning to play it.

Which saxophone model is right for me?

Which type of saxophone you choose is ultimately determined by your body size and the pitch you want to cover with your instrument . The most common types of saxophones include the soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophone. If you would like to find out more about the 4 common saxophone models, we recommend another blog post. In our buying guide “ Distinctively distinguishing saxophone types ,” we take a closer look at the different saxophones.
