Assembling a clarinet

Before you can get the first notes from a clarinet, you still need to do a few things. The clarinet consists of five parts, all of which have to be connected together.

Five become one: the components of a clarinet

At the top end we have the mouthpiece as a connection between man and machine. Together with the reed and the leaf screw , this is where the source of the sounds comes from. The barrel is located under the mouthpiece of the clarinet. The barrel is the smallest of the clarinet's five components and connects the clarinet mouthpiece to the top piece . With the upper part of the clarinet we have reached the first component with tone holes, keys, rings and trills. The keys of the upper piece are on the left side and are therefore played with the left hand. After the upper part comes the largest part of the clarinet, the lower part . On it we find further tune holes, keys, rings and trills. The key construction of the lower part is on the right side and is therefore played with the right hand. Last but not least, there is now one component left. We're talking about the bell-shaped end piece of the clarinet. This is referred to as the cup , which is sometimes also called the funnel.

Be careful when putting the clarinet together.

The five components of the clarinet are held together by so-called cork pegs. We recommend starting at the bottom of the clarinet with the cup and base. While with the German grip system you connection put the top piece, the barrel and, last but not least, the mouthpiece together , some caution is required with the French grip system . In the French version, the lower and upper pieces are mechanically connected to each other by the handle system. In order not to damage the flap mechanism at the transition between the lower and upper pieces, press the lower ring on the upper piece when putting them together so that the lever of the flap mechanism lifts slightly and thus enables safe plugging together.

Why should I re-grease the cork cones?

You can of course assemble the clarinet in a different order, but this will not change the sound . We recommend that all the components of the clarinet be gently put together on the cork cones by pressing and turning at the same time. If the resistance is too great, it helps to grease the individual cork cones with a cork stick.
