What do I have to consider when building a drum set?

Welcome to the session setup guide.

In this guides you will find all the important information you need to build your drum set. If you have any questions about your drum set beyond the guides , we will of course be happy to help you in person, by phone or by email at any time.

The individual components of your drum set

bass drum

The bass drum usually doesn't have any heads pre-assembled, so you have to attach the head skin and the resonant drum heads . The resonant drum heads (usually black with the manufacturer's logo) is placed on the side of the bass drum on which the legs are located. The head skin goes on the opposite side. The bass drum's two rims are also not pre-assembled. They are usually identical, but each have two different sides. One is flat and is intended to press the skin onto the shell , the other is rounded and faces outwards.

The tension claws are usually already assembled with the correct, slightly longer tension screws in the packaging, so you just have to attach them all around the bass drum. Attaching the rims is made easier using a standard cordless screwdriver; there is an optional attachment for this (see below).

Attention: Please do not tighten the tuning screws with the cordless screwdriver, but only until they are close to touching the rims . Then tighten the tuning screws by hand using the tuning wrench.

Some drums come with a hoop protection sticker. This is attached to the point of the tension hoop where the pedal is attached. If this tire protection is not included, you will find such a protective sticker in our webshop, along with lots of other practical helpers.

We recommend these useful helpers for mounting and protecting your bass drum.

Snare

On most drums, the snare drum is completely assembled and only needs to be tuned and placed on the appropriate stand .

hanging toms

Usually there are two hanging toms per drum kit. Like the snare, these are usually pre-assembled. It is fastenings to the bass drum with one or two tom holders. For right-handed people, the smaller tom is mounted on the left and the larger one on the right; for left-handed people, the reverse is the case.

Floor tom

Some manufacturers' floor toms have two rims attached to the shell , one above the other. In this case, unscrew both rims . After placing the skins on, attach one of the two rims to the top and the other to the bottom of the floor tom. Also attach the legs to the bottom.

hardware

There are special features with the hi-hat machine, the pedal and the cymbal stand with retractable boom. There is a little assembly work with the hi-hat machine: you have to put the individual parts (base, pull rod, middle tube) together. When placing the cymbals, note that the bottom one is usually labeled “Bottom” and the top one is usually labeled “Top.” If there is no inscription , the two parts are identical.

Attach the pedal to the front rims of the bass drum. Make sure the clamp is opened enough to avoid scratching the wood. When inserting the bat, also known as the beater, it is up to your taste whether you want to hit the head with the plastic or the felt side.

Now that your hardware is assembled and set up, you can attach the cymbals, toms and snare to the appropriate stands and roughly align them. In the next step, you determine the optimal arrangement of the individual components of your drum set for you.

Notes on building a drum set

The most important thing is that you sit comfortably at the drums and can easily reach anywhere with your sticks. When setting up your drum kit, make sure that the snare does not hit the bass drum and thereby damage it. So that you can easily access the hanging toms, you can align them at a slight angle. Here too, make sure there is enough distance from the bass drum.

The snare is always located exactly between the legs, to the right of it is the bass drum, to the left of it is the hi-hat (vice versa for left-handed people). The snare should be set high enough so that you can hit the head without getting caught on the rim .

Adjust your cymbal stands so that you don't hit the cymbals straight on their edge, but rather at a slight angle from above. This protects the cymbals and the sticks.
