What is metal music actually?
The term metal is the short form of the term Heavy Metal, which today usually refers to the original form of this music. The origins of metal lie in blues rock and hard rock of the early 1970s; it is characterised mainly by a guitar- and drum-heavy timbre.
Since the 1980s, numerous subgenres have established themselves; particularly widespread are, for example, black metal, death metal and power metal. With increasing stylistic diversity, the spectrum of musical techniques also expanded, ranging from extremely simple, mostly rhythmically driving song structures to complex compositions with parallels to classical music, from extremely slow to breakneck fast rhythms. As varied as the musical accompaniment are the lyrical themes of the metal scene, which range from pure fantasy through orgies of hate, religion, melancholy to political and social critique.
Today metal in all its styles is almost worldwide and has long since outgrown its niche status. Among the best-known and most influential metal bands are Black Sabbath, Megadeth and Tool, to name just a few.
