The Saxophone Reed
Like a little flag in the wind
If you want to produce sound with your woodwind instrument, you can't do without the reed. Just as the engine is to a car, the reed is to the woodwind instrument. Take the engine out and the car won't go. To put it simply and get to the point: no reed, no sound.
Traditional or hybrid
Originally, the reed is made from wood or cane. Thanks to their fibrous wooden structure, traditional reeds are particularly responsive to vibration. However, further-developed reed variants can also be made from other natural or synthetic materials. Besides the different sizes and strengths, the various materials simply offer the player an even greater selection of reeds.

From soft to hard
To distinguish reeds by their size and strength, different manufacturers use different designations. These can, similar to mouthpieces, consist of numbers, letters and special characters. Mostly, however, the different strengths are categorised with numbers from 1 to 5 or with common descriptions such as "soft, medium or hard".
Our specialist staff recommend
For the start our specialists recommend a light reed. Reed strengths between 1.0 and 2.5 or reeds labelled "soft" are best suited to beginners. More advanced players tend to use a medium reed strength from 2.5 upwards. In the end, as always, you should follow your gut feeling and what feels comfortable for you.
Moist reeds — not just in autumn
Before use, reeds should in any case either be soaked in warm water for 2 to 3 minutes or alternatively be moistened in the mouth with saliva. Only a moist reed can vibrate optimally.
A reed in reserve
Since reeds are consumable items, it's always a good idea to have 1 to 2 reeds in reserve. As soon as the first signs of mould, cracks or even chipping appear, you should change your reed. You'll find a selection of different reeds, suitable reed cases and accessories here.
