Dunlop Picks Guide
Much more than just a colourful piece of plastic!
Welcome to our comprehensive Dunlop picks guide! Whether you're just starting to play guitar or already an experienced pro, choosing the right pick will make a big difference to your playing.
Even our guitar guru Olli, who's been through it all when it comes to guitars, was shown a thing or two by the mastermind behind the colourful plastic pieces. After a personal, down-to-earth conversation, Jimi Dunlop said to Olli in his distinctive, raspy voice: "Try this!" and handed him a pick from the new Flow series. From that moment on, Olli's beloved green Dunlop Gator Grip in 1.5 mm thickness was retired, even though it had served him faithfully throughout his guitar life.
Which pick suits you and your playing?
In this guide we want to show you that picks are more than tiny bits of plastic – they are the link between you and your instrument and ultimately decisive for your sound, your playing feel and your technique! Based on 8 key criteria we'll explain how to find the pick that really suits you!
Material
Picks can be made from various materials such as Nylon, Tortex, Ultex and many others. Each material has its own tone and playing characteristics.
Shape
The shape of the pick influences how it sits in the hand and how precisely you can strike the strings. There are standard, triangle and jazz shapes, to name just a few.
Thickness
The thickness of the pick ranges from very thin to very thick. Thinner picks offer more flexibility, while thicker models provide better control and a fuller tone.
Colour
Even if it seems secondary at first glance, the colour of the pick can help you find it more quickly and match it to your personal style. Furthermore, e.g. the red Jazz III-Pick made from nylon sounds different than the black one made from Stiffo.
Grip
Good feel is essential to make sure the pick doesn't slip from your fingers. Some picks have special surfaces or grip textures.
Tip
The shape of the tip affects how you strike the strings. A pointed shape offers more precision, while a rounded tip produces a softer sound.
Edges
The edges can be sharp, smooth or rounded. This is caused by different manufacturing processes or by sanding.
Manufacturing
A distinction is made between stamped and moulded picks. Stamped picks often have sharper edges, while moulded models offer rounder edges.
