The right climate for your acoustic guitar
To keep your acoustic guitar in the optimal condition you received it from us, we want to give you some basic information and care tips.
Wood and climate
Your acoustic guitar is largely made of wood, a grown natural product. Wood is hygroscopic, which means that in dry air it releases moisture to the outside and conversely absorbs moisture in high humidity. When it releases moisture the wood shrinks and its volume decreases; when it absorbs moisture it swells and its volume increases. High-quality tonewood is used in guitar making. The high moisture content of fresh wood is carefully dried initially to 12–15% and, after further storage and pre-treatment, is processed with a residual moisture content of 8–12%. In this way it develops its desired structural and tonal properties.
Optimal storage
Because of the hygroscopic nature of the wood we recommend a relative humidity of 45 to 55% around the acoustic guitar. Therefore monitor the relative humidity in the case or in the room with a calibrated hygrometer. If the recommended range is exceeded or falls below it, contact us so we can advise you in detail on creating optimal conditions for your instrument. Ideally store your acoustic guitar in its case and never near a switched-on heater – including underfloor heating. When hanging it on a wall, avoid exterior walls and draughts.
