Djembes - African drums at session

The single-headed cup drum has its origins in West Africa. The body, which is on cut 60 centimeters high, originally consists of a hollowed-out tree trunk . Modern models are made from a mixture of plant fiber and synthetic resin. The wider opening is covered with fur about 30 centimeters in diameter . Intonation is achieved via cord tension or a mechanical tuning system. The instruments are played with bare hands .

How do the djembe models differ?

Classic distinguishing features are the instrument size , we offer models in heights of 8 inches (20.3 cm) to 25 inches (63 cm), and the batter head diameter. The sizes here range from 4.5 to 15 inches. Some instruments have cord tension . When it comes to body materials, you can choose between classic wood, such as mahogany or Iroko , or modern plastic versions.

Where are djembes used musically?

The djembe belongs to the catagory of percussion instruments and can be used as a solo or ensemble instrument . In addition to a drum set or the cajon, the djembe can also set the beat.
Depending on the attack point, bass-like sounds can be produced in the middle of the head. Open and slap-like sounds arise at the edge of the head / body transition.

Which manufacturers of djembes are there?

As a specialist shop, session offers a select selection of djembes from the MEINL brand. The instruments can be ordered online in our shop or tried out in our branches and compared with other percussion instruments. Our colleagues from the drum department are happy to give helpful tips on playing techniques and care .
