Meinl Percussion Sound-Hole-Designer
Due to the great popularity of the Sound-Hole-Designer series, we naturally checked out the new Kalimba models in the Meinl Percussion showroom on our tour. The kalimba body of the new variants is made of acacia, sapele or walnut wood depending on the model and produces a warm sound that is amplified by the sound hole. The great thing about playing kalimbas is that even inexperienced musicians can achieve big musical results very quickly, and they also help us relax our minds in our increasingly stressful everyday lives. The thumb pianos from the Meinl Percussion Sound-Hole family have 17 notes and are preset to the C major scale. Daniel tested the kalimbas for you. No matter which order he plucked the tines, they always harmonised with each other. It's not possible to play wrong notes ;-)
The kalimbas are available in the designs: Lava, Coral Reef and Sun. The package includes a soft case for transport, a tuning hammer for retuning and a microfibre cloth for cleaning.
If you want to enjoy the kalimba in a more "amplified" way, you should take a closer look at the electrified Solid-Pickup-Kalimba from Meinl Percussion. It offers the same features as the Sound-Hole-Designer models already presented, but is equipped with an integrated pickup and a high-quality 1/4-inch output jack. To find the ideal sound, the kalimba tone can be adjusted using the controls for Volume, FX Volume and Tone. In addition, the electrified thumb piano has an AUX/REC- and headphone output, making it a great choice for larger rooms, stages or even recordings.
Meinl Percussion FX5 effect pedal
& other electronic newcomers
Our tour of the Meinl Percussion showroom stays electric, because our expert Daniel spotted the FX5 effect pedal. Digital effects and playful electronic features are finding increasing use in modern percussion setups. The FX5 from Meinl Percussion is a digital percussion effect pedal with five preset sounds. The options are: Pop, Doom, SDS, 808-Sub and Soft-Kick. The pedal can be easily connected to an amplifier or PA system and, thanks to the robust steel pedal plate with a weighted body, is comfortable and smooth to play. The clear controls let you adjust dynamics and volume to your own taste. Power is provided by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. If you fancy expanding your otherwise analogue percussion setup with a digital component, take a closer look at the FX5 effect pedal.
Also new and electric is the Meinl Percussion Trigger Pedal. The functions of this very practical trigger pedal are quickly explained. Once the pedal is connected to a sound module via a 1/4-inch cable, it sends trigger signals to the module. The playing feel and robust construction won't disappoint.
The Compact Percussion Pad from Meinl Percussion offers a bit more functionality. It works similarly to the FX5 effect pedal and can be integrated into existing setups with ease. One obvious design feature is that the Compact Percussion Pad is triggered with the hands or sticks. Inside are five preset sounds (9000, SDS & 808 snare, tambourine and hand-clap) ready to be triggered or adjusted using the volume and sensitivity controls. We were impressed by the compact percussion pad.
Meinl Percussion 10" Side Snare-Drums
As another new item for 2024, Daniel presents two new 10" Compact Side Snare-Drums from Meinl Percussion in front of the camera. So-called side snare drums are characterised by a particularly bright, clear and overtone-rich sound. Both models are made from a 6-ply maple shell and offer a large tuning range. The Jingle Snare-Drum goes one step further and — as the name suggests — is fitted with stainless-steel jingles for a tambourine effect. Both effect snares are ideal for drummers and percussionists looking to elevate existing setups to a new sound level.
