Groove Tubes
Richard Aspen Pittman is known to most guitarists as a tireless inventor, thinker and creative mind. Already at the age of 11 he played in local bands. At 18 he took a job at the newly founded Guitar Center in Hollywood. Through his job he made contacts with the top musicians of that time and was able to help during recording sessions and on tours to find the ultimate sound.
In 1979 he finally set up his own consulting company, advising many instrument manufacturers and bands. In the same year he set out to optimise the working of tube amps. He invented a special test system for tubes and then sorted the selected tubes into different classes: tube-matching was born.
He then founded the company Groove Tubes. Even today there's a misconception that Groove Tubes actually manufactured the tubes. This is not the case: Aspen bought tubes worldwide, inspected and measured them, and they were then sold in matched sets, so you could get a perfectly matched tube pair or quartet. In addition, the classification into different classes also allowed the amp's sound to be shaped to your liking.
