Buy electric bass strings at session

The tone sounds dull, the feel suffers - your bass strings have exhausted their last spark of life. So the bass needs a new set of strings . But the selection of bass strings is large and can cause confusion, especially for beginners. What different types of bass strings are there? What should I pay attention to and which strings should I buy for my bass?

One of the most important points when distinguishing between different bass strings is the garnishment . In addition to the typical roundwound strings, there are flatwound strings that are wrapped with flat wire and are therefore smooth. As a result, they produce little to no background noise when you "slide" over them with your fingers, but they lose a bit of the sound compared to roundwounds.

Bass strings also differ considerably in the materials used. The classic is probably nickel-plated steel strings , which produce a bright and lively sound . If you are looking for an even more high-pitched sound for your bass guitar, it is best to use stainless steel strings . However, it should be said that they are noticeably harder and cause more damage to the fingers. Vintage fans who prefer a warmer and softer sound often purchase Pure Nickel Strings .

So-called coated strings are also worth a look. This coating varies for different brands, but noticeably extends the life of the strings . In addition to a smoother playing feel, coated strings are also slightly less brilliant. Although uncoated strings are slightly cheaper, some bass players swear by the extended life of coated strings to save money in the long term.

Since sets of strings vary in thickness, feel and sound from manufacturer to manufacturer, it is definitely advisable, especially as a beginner, to try out several brands, types and thicknesses of strings in order to find the most suitable set of strings. We also have a large selection of different string sets from well-known manufacturers such as Elixir , D'addario , Sadowsky or DR in our branches in Walldorf and Frankfurt, but of course also here in our webshop.

If you need some help putting on the strings , just take a look at our guides on “Changing electric bass strings ” . There our bass captain Marco will tell you how to optimally put new strings on an electric bass and also a few little tips and tricks for caring for your bass guitars.
