The history of the Gibson Firebird
The Firebird is one of the most distinctive-looking guitar designs ever! The Firebird Platypus takes this legendary guitar a step further with its unique appearance. Due to its two articulate, historically accurate Gibson Firebird mini humbucker pickups with Alnico V magnets the sound of this guitar is unique. Played clean it can deliver nearly bell-like chime sounds or cut easily through the mix with great rock and blues tones on higher gain stages. Individual volume and tone controls allow you to tailor the sound even further. The pickguard features the legendary hot-tamped Firebird graphic. This beautiful guitar comes with a hardshell case.
The most important features explained
The Firebird Platypus pays tribute to some rare transitional models. It features a mahogany body with a glued-in, set neck and the appearance of a traditional neck-through Reverse Firebird body. The mahogany neck has a SlimTaper profile and a rosewood fretboard and sports the Platypus- style headstock with Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners. The Platypus-style headstock has been slightly modified to provide straight string pull for less friction and improved tuning stability.

In early 1965, the original Firebird design transitioned through several different iterations. One of the significant transitions that occurred flipped the headstock to the “Non-Reverse” shape. Unlike the original Reverse design, which featured a two-layered headstock with a holly veneer, the new headstock was flat, like the billofa platypus. The Platypus-style Firebird featured six-in-line tuners rather than banjo-style, as seen on previous Firebirds.

Eine Hommage an die seltenen Ăśbergangsmodelle von 1965
Anfang 1965 durchlief das ursprüngliche Firebird-Design mehrere verschiedene Iterationen. Eine der bedeutenden Veränderungen bestand darin, dass die Kopfplatte in die "Non-Reverse"-Form gebracht wurde. Im Gegensatz zum ursprünglichen Design der Kopfplatte des Reverse Firebird, die aus zwei Schichten mit einem Veneer aus Stechpalme bestand, war die neue Kopfplatte flach wie der Schnabel eines Schnabeltiers. Die Firebird im Platypus-Stil war mit sechs in Reihe angeordneten Stimmmechaniken ausgestattet, im Gegensatz zu den Stimmmechaniken im "Banjo-Stil", die bei früheren Firebird-Modellen verwendet wurden.
Die Firebird Platypus ist eine Hommage an diese seltenen Übergangsmodelle. Sie verfügt über einen Mahagoni-Korpus mit eingeleimtem, aufgesetztem Hals und das Aussehen eines traditionellen Reverse Firebird-Korpus mit durchgehendem Hals. Die Kopfplatte im Platypus-Stil ist mit einem Graph Tech-Sattel und Grover Mini Rotomatic-Stimmmechaniken ausgestattet. Mit den individuellen Reglern für Volume und Tone kann der Klang noch weiter anpasst werden, und natürlich ist das Schlagbrett mit der legendären, heiß geprägten Firebird-Grafik versehen.

The Gibson Firebird, designed by car designer Ray Dietrich, was first introduced in 1963. What is particularly striking about the visual appearance of the electric guitars is undoubtedly the reverse design, i.e. a "side-mirrored" body and headstock. Gibson also gave the guitar a continuous neck and newly developed pickup. In 1965, Gibson revised the Firebird and reworked the mirrored design, swapped the continuous neck for a glued-in neck and presented new pickups again.
Production of the Firebird was initially discontinued in 1969 due to low demand. Gibson resumed production for a short time in the 1970s, but it wasn't until the 1990s that the Firebird became an integral part of Gibson's product portfolio again.
Today's Firebirds are available in both reverse and non-reverse designs and the continuous neck is also part of it. As is often the case with Gibson , the individual instruments in the series differ in their wood and electronics. The guitars often consist of a 9-ply mahogany body and a walnut neck with neck-through construction / acoustic. The electronics are formed by two switchable humbuckers.

Die US-amerikanische Gibson Guitar Corporation, gegründet 1902 von Orville Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, wurde zu Beginn bekannt durch die Fertigung von Mandolinen und Banjos. Heutzutage befindet sich der Hauptsitz der Firma in Nashville, Tennessee und Gibson zählt zu den weltweit namhaftesten und renommiertesten Herstellern von E-Gitarren.
Das Modell Les Paul, benannt nach seinem Erschaffer Lester William Polsfuss, ist eine der bekanntesten und meistverkauften E-Gitarrenformen aller Zeiten und begründete die Bauform der Single Cut-Gitarre, die von zahlreichen anderen Herstellern kopiert, übernommen und neuinterpretiert wurde. Die Les Paul wird hauptsächlich für ihren als warm und druckvoll charakterisierten Sound geschätzt. Auch der dafür mitverantwortliche Humbucker-Tonabnehmer, in seiner heute geläufigen Bauweise, wurde von Seth Lover bei Gibson entwickelt.
Anfang der 1960er Jahre erschien mit der Gibson SG eine weitere Solidbody E-Gitarre aus dem Hause Gibson. Zunächst als Nachfolger der Les Paul gedacht, wurde sie, auch dank Angus Young von AC/DC, zu einer weiteren Ikonen der Rock-Geschichte und ist die Grundlage für den Typ der Double Cut-Gitarre.
Mit der Flying V und der Explorer zeichnet sich Gibson fĂĽr zwei Korpusformen verantwortlich, die zwar zum Zeitpunkt ihres Erscheinens, Ende der 1950er Jahre, ihrer Zeit viel zu weit voraus waren, aber im Laufe der Jahre ebenfalls Legendenstatus erreichten. Bis heute dienen sie auch als Grundlage fĂĽr eine Vielzahl von Heavygitarren, beispielsweise von Herstellern wie Jackson oder ESP.
Der Gibson Custom Shop fertigt Auftragsarbeiten, hochwertige Einzelstücke und exakte Replikate berühmter Modelle und legendärer Jahrgänge ihrer Instrumente an. Oft werden diese auch einem künstlichen Alterungsprozess, genannt Relicing, unterzogen.
Fast genauso lange wie das Unternehmen existiert, werden auch Akustikgitarren produziert. So zählen die J-45, die Hummingbird, die L-00 und die SJ-200 zu den beliebtesten Westerngitarren der Welt und waren das Instrument der Wahl für Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley oder John Lennon.
