  • Five stars for both the instrument as well as the Frankfurt Session store. First the bass itself: I tried about fifteen different Sandberg California's in all kinds of wood-, finish- and electronics configurations. They all were beuatiful build and each and every one of them had it's own sound and character. It was a difficult choice to make, but in the and I went for the rosewood neck and alder body in the TM4 setup. It's amazing how many different sounds you can get from the bass. Due to the versitile configuration of pickup-settings and the possibility to switch from active to passive mode, allmost any sound can be obtained. Deep low-end with the neck pickup, mid-heavy jazzbass-like punch wirh the singlecoil switched bridge pickup or funky slap a la Stingray in the humbucker setting. It's all there. In passive mode it can compete with any Fender Jazzbass. Playability is really nice. I prefer an ultra low action, but the Sandberg bridge is really adjustable to anyone's need. The neck is smooth and comfortable and on top of that there's the perfect building quality and finish. There's no real competition in this price range...About the store I can be swift and easy: nice and professional service. I was there for a couple of hours and the guy at the bass department gave me all the time I needed and I could just compare and play as long as I wanted. Apart from that he had some good advice and he was obviously very capable and new what he was talking about. It was certainly worth the little detour (about 500 km's).
